Aalestrup Open – fly tying up one level

More than 40 fly tiers raised the bar at the annual fly tying competition Aalestrup Open this weekend. Aalestrup Open started out 23 years ago in Nørbæk, and was later moved to the beautiful home of the Aalestrup Angling Club, Fiskergården.

As usual the atmosphere was cozy and relaxed – but the competition was, never the less, brutally hard. The categories were dry flies, wet flies, nymphs, saltwater flies, pike flies, modern salmon flies, classic salmon flies and super realistic flies. In most categories the standard was sky high.

The late Preben Torp Jacobsen, grand old man in Danish fly tying and a local hero in Aalestrup, probably would have been proud of the results. The judges Orla Bertram Nielsen, Laurits Flowbinner (hey, having Fly tier as your second name… how cool is that:0) and I were all very impressed.
